According to the Kalachowky police, Farhana Sohail Shaikh and Qureshi checked into the hotel on Friday morning. They were also partners in an apparel business at Grant Road. “They had been in a relationship for the past one year,” said Dilip Ugale, senior inspector of Kalachowky police station. “She told Qureshi that they will be partners in business but asked him to pose as an employee rather than a partner in front of her husband,” he said.

Qureshi was indignant that he did not get his share of money from the business. “He told us that he was not happy with the earnings as he had to meet expenses for his family,” said Ugale.

At 10am, they entered the hotel to discuss the finances. The discussion snowballed into an altercation. “Farhana took her dupatta and tied it around her neck. She told him that this will teach him a lesson. In a fit of rage, Qureshi told her that he will teach her a lesson instead and tightened the grip of the dupatta, thus smothering her to death,” said Ugale.

Police stated that the woman was killed between 1.20 pm and 1.25 pm as Qureshi contacted the police control room at 1.28pm. He told the police about this and informed them about his hotel room on the first floor.

The Kalachowky police reached the hotel and arrested him. The body has been sent for a post-mortem. Qureshi will be produced before a local court on Saturday.
