The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday issued notice to the Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar and Technical University, Bathinda, on a petition by Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (POCA)which claimed that the two varsities were levying ‘exorbitant charges’ in the name of fee on them.
The bench has issued notice to the Punjab government also, seeking replies by October 21. The petitioners alleged that the two universities were violating directions issued by the state technical education department in the matter of prescribing the amount of fee and other charges (other than tuition fee) to be collected from students.
But universities were indulging into profiteering at the cost of colleges, who were to get such fee and charges from students at the rates prescribed by the universities. On the other hand, the colleges were incurring heavy losses for the said reason. It was prayed that universities be directed to refund all such fee and charges being collected by them from colleges concerned that are affiliated with them.
