Time was when the de facto road to success on the box office for many Indian filmmakers was to think of variations to the much-abused good-cop-turning-vigilante plot. From Suriya, Mahesh Babu, Ravi Teja to Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, we’ve seen mostly every hero donning the khaki to avenge injustice. We now have an addition to this list of mind-numbing cop dramas--superstar Vijay’s Theri. A 50-second teaser of the film, showing vignettes of a man on a path of revenge and retribution, was released on Friday.

Watch Theri teaser here:

The first few seconds introduce us to a cop – we see his menacing eyes, the shiny stars of his khaki, and his shiny shoes. Director Atlee channels Vijay’s ‘star status’ as the camera anxiously captures the hero taking that perfect aim... all so stylish, all meant to package the ‘star’ for his loyal audience and all that one has seen so many times before.

For most parts, we see Vijay in two avatars -- a tough-as-nail cop and a much young-looking Vijay. (ActorVijay/Facebook)

Cut to the next couple of scenes and we see a much-younger looking Vijay sharing some tender moments with a kid. Then, perhaps, the family guy chances upon an ‘ugly truth’. What follows, thereafter, is a lot of action – hand-to-hand combat, car chases, a lot of dust getting kicked in the bargain.

Puli review: Vijay’s fantasy drama is a fantastic flop

Theri also stars Amy Jackson and Samantha Ruth Prabhu and is being directed by Raja Rani director Atlee. The film is expected to release later this year.
