South Mumbai’s art district, Kala Ghoda, will soon add new dimensions to its cultural scene. The area, which houses art galleries and heritage buildings, will soon have a new exhibition space dedicated solely to the works of international painters.
The gallery, called Galerie Isa, will be opened to the public on December 16. Says founder Ashwin Thadani, “The gallery will sell only cutting edge international contemporary art. We plan to work with some artists directly, or through international galleries.”
The 2,000 square foot gallery, spread out over two levels, aims to host at least four exhibitions yearly. Adds Thadani, “It’s a new concept for Indian buyers. We are looking at making local collectors aware of international art. It becomes easier when the work is exhibited in India, rather than them having to travel abroad to view the collection.”
So is there a market for expensive international art in a price-conscious market like India? Thadani reveals, “The average buyers in India are elites who understand and appreciate paintings. We foresee a demand for international painters in our country.”
As part of its commitment to make international art available to Indian buyers, the gallery will host Berlin-based artist, Anselm Reyle, during the launch.
