Adaptations of Shakespearean plays and dramas based on stories by the Grimm Brothers are commonplace in the city. And now, theatre lovers in Mumbai can treat themselves to an Indian adaptation of the classic French Opera, Carmen.
Club Desire is a contemporary adaptation of Georges Bizet's masterpiece. The drama traces the intense love story between two diametrically opposite characters — Chahat, an eccentric and anarchic singer; and Jayam, a conventional poet. The play goes on to explore how their relationship affects their lives and work.
"On the surface, it may be a volatile love story, but it deals with various themes like jealousy, anarchy, possessiveness and freedom," says Manasi Parekh, the lead actor, who will be seen performing live on-stage today (October 26).
"We have been working on this for the past six months. Personally, I think , for the first time in the city, Electronic Dance Music (EDM) will be performed live on stage, as part of the play. The DJ is a member of the cast. We have used this technique to project Mumbai’s nightlife," says Deepa Gahlot, head of theatre and film programming, NCPA.
"The best part of the play is its music. Though we cannot call it an out-and-out musical, the compositions used in the drama are different from the musicals we see in the city," adds Gahlot.
