As the world gets ready to celebrate International Women’s day on March 8, the run-up to it is lined with a variety of cultural events to salute female-power in the city. From women-centric films and plays to the first ever all-women comedy show and a car rally all the way to Rishikesh, girls in the city — young, middle-aged and old — are enjoying their new-found confidence and pride to the hilt this week. Join them in celebrating yourself!
Women on wheels
Women and their driving skills have often been a laughing matter for men. If you want to change this perception, join a host of ladies as they drive down on their own from Delhi to Rishikesh as part of a Women Car Rally this month. So, if you have a valid driving license and a friend willing to navigate along, get set to hit the road.

Kya yeh zamana badlega?
A group of men and women from Let’s Walk Gurgaon Theatre Group are getting together to perform a Nukkad Natak (street play) about women empowerment at various malls and markets in the Millennium City next weekend. “The play creates awareness about a woman’s dreams, her need to be free and how she overcomes societal pressures,” says Anjali Srivastava, coordinator of the group.

Stand-up comedy has majorly been a man’s domain. This week, a bunch of three lady stand-up comedians — Neeti Palta, Vasu Primlani and Aditi Mittal help you laugh at the world from a woman’s perspective in their show — That’s What She Said #TWSS. “Being a part of a male dominated field like comedy is a statement in itself. Often, the audience can take a joke from a man but not from a woman,” says Neeti Palta. “I even have rape jokes in my segment to help people talk about the issue,” says Vasu Primlani.

Chick Flicks
Watch films like Kahaani — about a pregnant woman’s search for her missing husband that takes her from London to Kolkata, Erin Brockovich — the true story of an unemployed single mother who becomes a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting the city water supply. You can also watch Spanish movie Te Doy Mis Ojos (Take my eyes) about domestic abuse and Ayna (Mirror) in Bangladeshi that revolves around the victim of an acid attack. The screenings are open to Habitat film Club Members.

Fly High Freely
This two hour production sees 21 women from different walks of life come together on stage to weave tales of womanhood. Presented by Urban Suburban Productions, the show is a collection of 5 short plays that take a look at a woman’s life with all its frills, fancies and challenges. “The firefly, which looks ordinary in the day and shines at night, is a metaphor for a woman who shines her brightest in the face of adversity,” says Vanessa Ohri, co-director of the play.
