Framed: Women around the world and their lives, showcased at this exhibition

An exhibition in Delhi has on display 44 photographs that depict the lives of women and skills of female photographers, from across the world.

Visualise some breathtaking landscapes – the mountains, the beaches, the transit pathways. And right in teh middle of the picturesque view, imagine a woman trapped in a box. Shocked? That’s exactly the expression that the works of Kuwaiti photographer Farah Salem seeks to evoke.

Salem’s works are displayed along with 44 photographs by 11 photographers, who were selected from a total of 785 applications, received from 84 countries. The entries were sent for International Women Photographers Awards – and the works of the finalists are on display at an exhibition in the Capital.

From India, Kolkata-based Ranita Roy’s black and white frames narrate the story of her grandmother’s life. “Since my childhood I have seen her as a spirited woman. Now in her 80s, she’s still the source of positivity, strength and motivation for all of us in the house. Though my grandfather died 5-6 years ago, she never let that hit her and is an inspiration for others to learn to live life independently, without allowing negativity to get to you,” says the 22-year-old Roy, an MSc student who pursues photography as a hobby.

The lives of many such strong women, like Roy’s grandmother, are depicted in the photos, which are clicked by other women.“Most of the participants portrayed the subjects of freedom and border(s) in their work,” adds Arantza.

Prior to Delhi, this exhibition was put up in Dubai and will now travel to Port Said, Egypt.
