Here’s your chance to preview the masterpieces of Indian modern and contemporary art, that’ll be auctioned next week.

A total of 134 artworks, covering 70 masters and eminent artists, will be on display today, to amuse the art lovers in the Capital. As part of the new Creative India Series, Osian’s — Connoisseurs of Art, will display the much-treasured artworks covering the masters and the history of Indian modern and contemporary art, 1780-2000.

The opening preview today — for the auction to be held on December 15 — will focus on renowned artists from Bengal, and will be the first in the series of four auctions planned over the next few months.

The auction will feature artworks by the early 19th century’s anonymous Bengal-based artists in the traditional miniature tradition, who initiated the use of oil on canvas by Indian artists, to our famous National Art Treasures.

The auction is yet another initiative by Osian’s to revive the Indian art market. “The loss of focus on artistic historical significance as the key parameter in the pricing and valuation of artworks, has been one of the main reasons for the slump in the Indian art market. The last 15 years have seen significant new platforms build, but these next ten years will actually see the institutional superstructures emerge,” says Neville Tuli, founder and chairman of Osian’s.
