A group of theatre enthusiasts bring to the city an Indian take on Oscar Wilde’s famous dark comedy — The Importance Of Being Earnest.

Being presented by At Rise Productions, a theatre group in the city, the play - J for Earnest, which has seven characters, is directed by Archit Kumar, who has performed in over 40 plays.

“People see the play just as a comedy and often forget the underlying message, which deals with the society. Through this adaptation, we are trying to bring out the darker side of the script,” says Kumar.

The play brings together some known faces in the Delhi theatre circle. “To be honest, it’s very difficult to even attempt to do justice to an Oscar Wilde story. The script of the play has a different connotation for everyone. This is a very localised attempt to his work,” says actor Rahul Mudgal, who plays the role of Earnest in the play.

However, one thing that Wilde’s fans will miss for sure is the popular character of Gwendelon, which has been replaced by a new character called Jude. This character will be played by actor Sanchita Mukherji, who has been doing theatre since her childhood. “The character of Gwendelon has been very popular. But I am sure that Jude will make a good impression as well,” says Mukherji.
