From thespian Shernaz Patel playing an abuse victim to an edgy Nachiket Purnapatre caught in a ménage-a-trois, the Mahindra Theatre Festival brings fine actors in interesting roles.

The festival, which begins on March 2, features productions shortlisted for this year’s Mahindra Excellence in Theatre awards.

The nominees for best actress include Patel for Blackbird, Rasika Joshi for White Lily Aani Night Rider and Ketaki Thatte for S*X, M*Rality And Cens*Rship.

S*X, M*Rality... deplores the outrage that accompanied the staging of Vijay Tendulkar’s Sakharam Binder in the early seventies.

Garbo revolves around a woman’s relationship with three men. As Intuc, her art aficionado lover, Purnapatre is impressive. But if the Kaminey actor whets your appetite for histrionics, reserve the desserts for Patel’s nuanced performance. Based on the story of a Scottish sex offender, Blackbird, recreates an encounter between a woman and a middle-aged man with whom she had a sexual relationship at the age of 12.
