Asian Games 2018: Saurabh Chaudhary clinches gold, Abhishek Verma bronze in 10m Air Pistol shooting
Saurabh Chaudhary won gold while Abhishek Verma clinched bronze in the 10m Air Pistol final as India took their medal tally to seven at the Asian Games 2018 on Tuesday.Updated: Aug 21, 2018 13:11 IST
Saurabh Chaudhary produced an Asian Games record score of 240.7 to clinch the gold medal in Men’s 10m Air Pistol final at the Asian Games 2018 on Tuesday. Abhishek Verma won the bronze with a score of 219.3.
Chaudhary piped Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsuda (239.7) in an exciting final to add a gold to India’s shooting tally of two silver and a bronze in this year’s Games.
In second position for most of the final, Chaudhary grabbed the lead after Matsuda fired 8.9 in his penultimate shot. The Indian went ahead with a 10.2 off his second-last shot and held the nerve to stay ahead.
“I did not feel any pressure,” said Chaudhary, who picked up the sport only three years ago when asked about the competition that included Matsuda and Jin Jingoh from South Korea, the multiple-time Olympic and world champion.
It was a brilliant performance by the 16-year old Chaudhary after he topped the qualification round with a score of 586. Abhishek Verma qualified in the sixth position with a score of 580.
India previously won three medals in shooting at the Asian Games 2018 – Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar opened the account with a bronze in 10m Air Rifle Team event, Deepak Kumar won silver in 10m Air Rifle individual event and 18-year old Lakshay clinched the silver medal in Men’s Trap.
It has been a great year for Saurabh Chaudhary till now as the youngster set a new world record on the way to winning a gold medal in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.
Earlier, Saurabh qualified for the Youth Olympics Games with a gold medal and a junior world record at Asia Youth Olympics Games qualification.
Abhishek Verma also impressed everyone with his show in the national trials earlier in the year and at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, the 29-year old won the mixed gold with Yashaswini Deswal. In the 10m Air Pistol individual event, he scored 585 in qualification beating Deepak Sharma, Jitu Rai and Amanpreet Singh to the top in the trials.
