Prominent among the ruling party losers may include such heavyweights as Manish Gupta, the power minister in the present government who could lose to the CPI(M)’s Sujan Chakraborty from Jadavpur. Gupta had created history in 2011 by humbling then chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Another surprise loser could be Abdur Rezzak Mollah in Bhangar. Mollah is a recent entrant into the Trinamool from the CPI(M). He won from Canning in 2011 bucking the Trinamool sweep trend.

In Kalimpong, where there is a prestige fight on between Harka Bahadur Chettri and the GJM nominee, Sarita Roy, the former could lose. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has openly pledged her party’s support for Chhetri, who is contesting as his newly-floated Jan Andolan Party candidate.
