As many as 1,68,395 people from Rewa, Satna and Sidhi could not take the second round of Sakshar Bharat Mission (SBM) examination due to floods in the districts.
The exam, aims at educating people who have missed the opportunity or have crossed the age of formal education, was scheduled on Sunday in which 17 lakh students aged between 15 and 80 had to appear in 42 districts and 31 villages of Madhya Pradesh.
The Union government plans to provide functional literacy to 70 million non-literate adults in the age group of 15 years and beyond in the country.
The first round was held in March in which 88% applicants qualified.
“This (Sunday’s exam) round was for the rest 12% who could not qualify, and for all those who were enrolled under this scheme but couldn’t take the first round of exams. This is an unfortunate time as floods have affected the entire state,” said Dr Rakesh Dubey, the coordinator of Sakshar Bharat Mission for Madhya Pradesh.
Dubey said the district administrations had requested Rajya Shiksha Kendra commissioner Deepti Gaur Mukherjee to take the Union government’s permission if they could conduct examination during floods. But the plan could not be executed.
“About 10 days from now if the flood conditions don’t subside in these districts, then we will release a fresh date for examination,” said Dubey.

{{/usCountry}}The applicants include 70,000 from Satna, 48935 from Rewa and 50,000 from Sidhi district.
About 31 villages, adopted by MPs under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, were included in the scheme in March.
