Bhopal: In the wake of death of a student in a tragic incident in Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) the institute administration has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on 14 final year students and have asked them not to leave the campus until further orders.
A final year student Abhay Anand, 24, a resident of Orai, Uttar Pradesh drowned in a pond in MANIT premises on March 4. Later, police found liquor bottles from the spot. During interrogation, students informed that the incident took place after a small party of final year students organised in the evening to celebrate their success.
Anand accidentally slipped in the pond and drowned. He was rushed to a hospital but couldn’t be saved. However, the family members of Anand alleged that Abhay was killed. Police are investigating the matter.
In a meeting of proctoral board held on Monday, the committee decided to slap a fine of Rs 50,000 on 14 students who were with Anand for their act of indiscipline and boozing on the college campus. After taking a decision upon it, the minutes of the meeting have been forwarded to the MANIT director NS Chaudhary.
According to the institute sources, the basic motive of imposing a heavy fine is to give money to the parents of the deceased as a token of compensation.

{{/usCountry}}“We are thinking of giving collected fine to the family of the deceased. The administration will talk to parents of Abhay Anand and if they agree upon it, the money will be given to them,” said a member of the committee, who didn’t wish to be named.
MANIT, public relation officer, Ajay Verma said, “The final notice will be released by the director only after that he would comment over it.”
Despite repeated attempt, the director NS Chaudhary couldn’t be contacted.
The students, however, regret their act of partying.
“Yes, we agree that our carelessness during celebration led to this accident. We are restless and remorseful. The moment will continue to haunt us for our entire life. But the allegation that we killed Anand is truly baseless. We are ready to face any disciplinary action,” said one of the students talking to the Hindustan Times.
