Nishatpura police registered as many as seven FIRs against nearly 1,500 persons, including 52 known persons, in connection with the attack on Shias allegedly by a mob of Sunnis at Aman Colony Thursday morning.
Police have arrested about 40 persons till Friday evening. An FIR has also been registered against Shias in connection with a clash between the two sides on Wednesday night.
Whereas police’s role came in for criticism for not being able to check violence on Thursday despite the clash on Wednesday night, police authorities say had the police not been alert the attack would have led to severe casualties on Thursday.
“At least a dozen would have been killed so much was the preparedness on the part of assailants. We had to send an alert to our department for more tear gas shells when the available stock was nearly exhausted. We had to fire several shots in air to control them,” said a senior police officer.
However, he said refusal of Quick Response Force unit deployed at Aman Colony to fire in air without a written order put them in an awkward position. “We were giving instructions on the wireless set and in such volatile situation a formality like written order was hardly warranted. However, anyhow, we managed the situation,” he added. Bhopal IG Yogesh Choudhary said, “I did not receive any such complaint from my officers. If they complain about it, I will look into the same.”
