Bhopal: Taking a cue from chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Madhya Pradesh government has decided to cancel 20 to 25 public holidays marking the birth or death anniversary of eminent personalities in the schools of the state.

Deepak Joshi, minister of state for school education told HT that Yogi Adityanath’s decision to cancel 15 state holidays on birth and death anniversaries is a step in the right direction.

“After Yogi Adityanath’s decision, we were inspired to take a similar step here. So we are planning to cancel at least 20 to 25 holidays here”, he said.

“If there is death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, what will students learn about him and his life if there is a holiday on that day. We have also decided that on such days, instead of holiday, students will be taught about the life and contribution of such great personalities”, he said.

Joshi said details about which holidays will be cancelled were being worked out.

In last week of April, Uttar Pradesh government had cancelled 15 public holidays marking the birth or death anniversary of eminent personalities and teach students on these days about the personalities through various programmes. Earlier Adityanath had expressed concern over the shrinking academic session due to increased holidays.
