The accused man, Shekhar, who was drunk, allegedly banged his wife Anita’s head repeatedly on the floor when she refused to give him the money, which resulted in her death, said investigating officer SKS Parihar of Kanadia police station.

Their son Amit tried to save his mother, but Shekhar beat him up too. Shekhar is now absconding, police said.

Police officer Parihar said neighbours and Amit told them that Shekhar and Anita, who lived in Indore Development Authority (IDA) flats in Bhuri Tekri, often fought, mainly over money for liquor.

They fought on Sunday night and again started fighting around 4am on Monday, they said.

After committing the crime, Shekhar fled with his two other sons – Lucky (5) and Rahul (6). Their eldest son, Sumit, was with his grandmother at the time of the incident.

Both Shekhar and Anita were daily-wage earners. Shekhar used to work in construction sites while Anita worked at the loha mandi. They used to live in a nearby slum but were given the flat by the IDA for vacating the slum nearly a year back.
