The Crime Branch claims to have arrested a youth, who had sent a threatening letter to an executive engineer, demanding Rs 15 lakh from him.
The complainant, Mahesh Raghuvanshi, who is posted as executive engineer with Narmada Valley Development Corporation, had received a letter in which he was asked to pay Rs 15 lakh.
Raghuvanshi had received an SMS that a letter had been sent to him and it was lying in an empty cigarette pack in his car outside his house in Shivaji Nagar. When Raghuvanshi went out, he found the threatening letter that bore the name of one 'Abdul Bashir Ahmad, SIMI'. Later, he got a call and was told that if he didn't pay the money, he and his family members would be 'eliminated'.
Police sources said Raghuvanshi expressed his inability to pay the amount and approached the police. Subsequently, the police began tracking the youth and finally he was arrested. Police said the youth, Dron Sinha (22), a resident of Patna, is an engineering passout.
Sinha had completed his engineering from Bhopal and had earlier lived on rent at Raghuvanshi's house. During initial interrogation, Sinha told police that he wanted quick buck and hence made the extortion bid.
"He had the impression that Raghuvanshi was not a tough man and may come under pressure and cough up the money," said a crime branch officer. "He doesn't seem to have any link with SIMI but felt that it takes years to earn money through a salaried job while extortion attempt, if turns successful, may turn him into a rich man overnight," the officer further added. Sinha has been arrested and is being interrogated.
