Not allowed to wear bangles and 'bindi', a widowed woman allegedly hacked her mother-in-law to death in Chhindwara district, about 273 km from Bhopal, the police said here on Tuesday.
According to the police, 70-year-old Kausalya Bai was found dead in a pool of blood at her house at Dhoda village on April 4, under Harrai police station of the district.
She was living with her daughter-in-law Girija Bai, 35, and two grandchildren 10 and 13 years old.
Girija was arrested and sent to judicial custody on Monday.
PC Tekam, Harrai police station incharge, said, "She (Girija) had tried to mislead the police, but she later broke down and confessed to have axed her mother-in-law."
Girija told the police that her husband had committed suicide about two years ago after which her mother-in-law had insisted that she doesn't wear 'bindi' and bangles — symbol of married woman in Hindu religion.
Thus the two women used to quarrel almost every day over the matter.

{{/usCountry}}"On the night of April 4, Girija wore bindi, following which Kausalya started abusing her. This irked Girija so much that she took an axe and hacked Kausalya, who was lying on her bed," Tekam told Hindustan Times over phone.
He further said Kausalya’s grandchildren had also confirmed that their mother had killed their grandmother.
"We have also recovered the axe, which was used for the crime from the house of accused. The statements of the children have also been recorded," Tekam further pointed out.
