Huma Qureshi on being choosy: I just can’t do boring films or compromise on content

Actor Huma Qureshi says that whenever people tried to typecast her in serious roles, she came back with scripts like Jolly LLB 2 to break those notions.

Hailing from Delhi and coming to Mumbai as someone who’s naïve to the ways of the film industry, actor Huma Qureshi has definitely come a long way. From making her debut in an intense film like Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) to portraying the lead role opposite Akshay Kumar in an out-and-out commercial project, Jolly LLB 2, Huma has never really worried about getting typecast.

Actor Huma Qureshi made her Bollywood debut with the 2012 film Gangs of Wasseypur.

“I know that when you do similar kind of films, one after the other, people tend to stereotype and say ‘she is only good at this’. But then a project like Jolly breaks the notion. So, that’s what my strategy has been,” says Huma.

Describing “interesting mainstream cinema” as her cup of tea, Huma adds, “I just cannot do a boring film. It has to be interesting with a good character. Whether it comes through a Jolly or Gangs of Wasseypur, I will prefer to do kickass stuff with good makers and co-stars.”

Unlike a lot of actors who get affected by the number game and keep a tab on the box-office collections, Huma believes in taking it easy and letting the audience give the verdict. “Whether my film becomes commercially successful or not, only God can tell, or the box-office numbers. So why worry about it and get distracted?” she asks, adding, “It’s in nobody’s hands. So I’d rather focus on reading more scripts and bagging better projects.”
