Some actors shoot to the top, as if with a jet pack on their backs. Some conquer fame like scaling Mt Everest. Irrfan is in the latter category. One of the most sought-after actors in Bollywood; someone who has had several starring roles in Hollywood; the quintessential Everyman who is somehow also a unique individual — all that is Irrfan.

And all that didn’t come easy. “I’ve evolved and have come to this point,” he says. “Initially, I’d have done anything [for a role]. I just wanted to do cinema, make my presence felt. But slowly it became important that I should tell my kind of stories. I do get lot of offers, which are formula films, multi-hero films — I have no problems with them, but watching the same kind of story for years puts me off. I don’t feel like doing such films.”
He adds, “I pray to God all the time that I don’t have to do films that I don’t want to. I should not do films under compulsion. I want to do films for passion, for exploration, for a different experience. The first thing that I look for in a film is the story.”
Going back to his initial hunger for a role, any role, we ask if Irrfan — like so many others in any entertainment industry — had to grit his teeth and get through an unsavoury situation, perhaps face an indecent proposition. He says, “One needs to find a way out of such situations. While there are those who’re against it, there are others who’re ready to use their sexuality to reach somewhere. It’s an individual choice. I don’t want to judge anyone for this. If society is sexually repressed, there’s bound to be some kind of exploitation, by men or women.”

The actor is obviously content with the reaction. He’ll next be seen next in Karwaan, which marks the Bollywood entry of popular Malayalam film actor Dulquer Salmaan, son of movie icon Mammootty. He is also in Vishal Bhardwaj’s next film, which will see his pairing with Deepika Padukone once again after Piku (2015). About this film, Irrfan says, “It’s too early to talk about his character, as it’s too shallow to be described at this stage. But yes, I’m pretty hopeful and excited to work with both Deepika and Vishal. Can’t wait to start making the film together.”
