I don’t feel jealous of Sonam Kapoor: Alia Bhatt

Bhatt says she feels envious of other actors at times, because it’s a “normal emotion”.

She is only 23, and she has already delivered five hits. Alia Bhatt, who comes across as a refreshingly honest actor, is currently riding high on her recent hit, Kapoor & Sons.

We chat with her about her journey so far, comraderies between actresses today, and more.

At such a young age, do you feel like the stardom gets a bit too much to deal with at times?

Yes, sometimes, I have moments when I feel, “I want to sleep,” or “You guys are making me work so much.” I am young, a little stupid (laughs), and restless. But, I am also very passionate. So, I want to keep working. If you take this away from me, I will complain. So, it’s like two sides of a coin.

When a contemporary of yours does well, like Sonam Kapoor, whose film, Neerja, became a hit, do you feel jealous?

But jealousy must creep in from time to time?

I will not deny that there have been times when I have felt jealous. It’s a normal emotion. If someone says, “I’ve never felt that emotion,” then he or she is lying, because it’s not possible to not feel jealous. Forget heroines, you can feel jealous of a hero also. However, in the recent past, I don’t think I have felt jealous because I only feel happy for people who are doing well.

Unlike old times, new-age actresses seem to be friendlier with each other. Is this perception true?

There are people who can have problems with each other, but I don’t see any reason to have problems with anyone. All of us don’t really care [about such things], and we are very chilled out. Plus, we are comfortable in our own spaces. It’s not like we are best friends, but we aren’t enemies either.

You are on great terms with most of the actresses today…

In a lot of ways, I am inspired by them. I think Parineeti (Chopra) is a phenomenal actor, so she inspires me. Even Shraddha (Kapoor) is extremely hard working, and has a beautiful voice. Plus, she has the face of a quintessential heroine, and has a huge fan following. So, she inspires me too. Even Deepika (Padukone), Priyanka (Chopra) and Katrina (Kaif) are all inspiring people. So, why should I have a problem with anybody?

Is it a great time to be a Bollywood actress?

Definitely, it’s such a lovely time to be part of films, where characters and roles are given so much importance. It’s no longer only about the love story between a hero and heroine. We all want to see love stories as love is a very important part of our lives, but we also want to see other stories. That’s why I find Kapoor & Sons so interesting. It’s a story not just about two people, but so many more, and each character has its own graph. Take for instance, even Gauri Shinde’s film. No one would have imagined me working with Shah Rukh (Khan). But,obviously, there’s a story that has brought us together. I just pray that the same happens with all actors across all age groups.

Will we see you in a film made under your father, Mahesh Bhatt’s banner?

Officially speaking, there’s no film right now, but something’s always cooking. In fact, now there are some ingredients too. However, we are yet to complete the dish with a tadka (laughs), which means we’re yet to finalise the project. But something will definitely come of it. There’s no deadline though. This year, nothing will happen, as 2016 is completely packed for me. I don’t have any time. So, maybe, next year.
