You don’t get to hear Kumar Sanu, the reigning singer of the ’90s era, a lot in Bollywood nowadays. Though the 60-year-old has lent his voice to only a couple of films in the past few years, such as Rowdy Rathore (2012) and Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), the veteran vocalist doesn’t believe in approaching people t o seek work. According to the singer, he has reached a stage in his career where composers and filmmakers know what he can deliver and expects them to offer him a song and not the other way round.
“I don’t want to request anyone to give me songs to sing. I’ve reached a stage where I have created my niche and everyone knows what I’m capable of. I can’t lose my self respect by knocking at everyone’s door in Bollywood for work. I would rather work on my private albums, do shows and sing for regional films,” he says.
Unlike other artists, who conduct themselves in a certain manner to stay in public glare, Sanu says he is incapable of such behaviour and not that desperate.“I can’t do indirect promotion to get work. These days, social media platforms are used as promotional tools. I won’t say it’s a bad thing, but I can’t do that. How many people know that I run schools in Kolkata and Delhi for street children, and that I am planning to open more? I can’t go about blowing my own trumpet. But now, I think, it’s important to let everyone know what you are doing,” he says.
