The nation was shocked when Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, a doctor couple, were pronounced guilty of murdering their 14-year-old daughter, Aarushi in 2008. The verdict was given by a CBI Court in 2013. However, the Allahabad High Court acquitted the couple today, and their release seems to have brought an air of relief among a large section of people, including Bollywood celebrities.

While filmmaker Shekhar Kapur tweeted, “Nothing worse than parents accused of their own daughters murder. And then horrible sordid made up stories lapped up by media #ArushiVerdict (sic).” Actor Kabir Bedi wrote, “ACQUITTED!!! Rajesh and Nupur Talwar not guilty of #Aarushi’s murder. Finally, justice prevails, nightmare ends. #AarushiVerdict”.

Director Vishal Bhardwaj, who wrote and composed the music of the film, issued an official statement that said: “We were questioned by a lot of people when we made Talvar, even though we didn’t take any sides in presenting the story and maintained as neutral a viewpoint as was possible. I am overwhelmed and relieved to hear of the Talwars’ acquittal and this strengthens my faith in the Indian judicial system. However, it still pains me when I think about the precious years lost in prison and the emotional trauma that the parents had to go through, so much so that they couldn’t even mourn their own daughter’s demise.”

14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found murdered inside her bedroom in her Noida house on May 16, 2008.

Aarushi (14), a resident of L-32 Jalvayu Vihar in Noida was found dead in her bedroom with her throat slit on May 16, 2008. Two days later, the body of Hemraj, their domestic help, and the initial suspect of the case, was recovered from the terrace of the same flat. And the door of the terrace was locked from inside. CBI took over the case from Noida Police, after it was badly criticised for a ‘botched up’ investigation.

Some reports suggest that CBI may challenge the verdict of the Talwars’ acquittal.
