The 53-year-old Bollywood star is serving the remaining 42 months of his five-year jail term at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune after being convicted in May of possessing illegal firearms in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

On Friday, Dutt was granted parole for 30 days by Pune divisional commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh after filing an application citing his wife’s illness.

However, controversy erupted when Maanyata was photographed by the media while attending two separate events in Mumbai on Thursday.

However, a doctor on Saturday said Maanyata was indeed ill.

“Maanyata has a tumour in the liver. She had chest pain and has lost ten kilos in 15-20 days,” Dr Ajay Chaughule told PTI.

“We have advised her to undergo certain tests for heart ailment. Once the tests are done, we can decide whether surgery is required or not.”

Following protests outside the Yerawada jail over Dutt’s parole, Maharashtra home minister RR Patil has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the basis for granting parole to the actor.
