On Teacher’s Day, Rock On star Shraddha Kapoor remembers her school days and her mentors.
I studied at two institutions — Jamnabai Narsee School, Vile Parle (W), and American School of Bombay (ASB), Bandra (E). I feel extremely fortunate to have had the most amazing teachers in my life. I have fond memories of them. I am in touch with a few, who send me messages when they watch my movies. Some of them call me too. I was also lucky to have some teachers who became my friends. Looking back, I feel that was a special aspect of my relationship with them.
I remember, whenever I made errors in my essays, my English teacher, Ms Pullen, corrected me in a way that never made me feel bad about making mistakes. Instead, her guidance made me want to do better. As a child, when your teacher helps you grow in a positive manner, and helps you feel excited about and interested in a subject, that encouragement stays with you.
While it is difficult to choose a favourite teacher, my theatre teacher, Mr Stroupe, from ASB, always ensured we had a blast. He had a great sense of humour, and he integrated that in his classes. That was an awesome way of teaching, and it has stayed with me. One of my most recent teachers was Mr Faustain, who taught me how to play the keyboard for my next film. Another teacher was Samantha Edwards, who is an awesome jazz singer and my vocal coach for the movie. After many rehearsals, I sang and played the keyboard, and it went off well. They were smiling and hugged me. They were proud of me.
