We’ve tried very hard to keep sleaze out of our film, Dobaara: Huma Qureshi

The actor talks about working on a horror film with her brother Saqib Saleem and her next film with South superstar, Rajinikanth.

Huma Qureshi is of the opinion that horror as a genre hasn’t been explored to its full potential yet. The actor and her brother Saqib Saleem will be seen playing siblings in Dobaara, the remake of Hollywood movie Oculus (2013) - a supernatural psychological horror directed by Mike Flanagan.

Huma says it was a lot of pressure to ensure that no compromises were made when it came to the content of the film. She says, “We’ve tried to keep sleaze out of our film. India has a huge audience for horror films. Look at films like Conjuring (2013) and how well they’ve done in India. A lot of families have stopped going to theatres to watch horror movies because the content would be sleazy. We’ve tried hard to keep it clean, so people who come to watch a pure horror film will not be disappointed. It is an experiment that we have undertaken, and I hope it pays off.”

The siblings live together in Mumbai, but Huma says she discovered a new side to her brother while working on the film. “Saqib comes across as this fun-loving person who is the life of every party. But I realised that he is also very sensitive and disciplined. He didn’t take me for granted just because I am his sister. He gave me the space that I needed to perform a scene, and that was new for me, yet amazing,” she says.

Huma is also preparing for the release of her next film, in which she shares the screen with superstar Rajinikanth. Ask her when the project will roll and she says, “I think it’s the prerogative of the producers to make the official announcement regarding this project. At this point, I won’t be able to say anything more,” she signs off.
