They say when passion calls, we all come running. This is what happened with Nikita Deshpande. The 27-year-old assistant director who has turned an author with her debut book, It Must’ve Been Something He Wrote.
“I started writing random stories on mails, which I wuold mail to myself. Oblivious to the fact that someday, it would turn out to be a book,” she says.
How she got the contract to write the book is an interesting story herself. “I have been an assistant director since years now, but I loved to write and was hungry to do something. So a friend told me about a competition, where I was supposed to submit my manuscript. The selected manuscripts were to turn out to be a published book. So I participated, and here I am,” says Deshpande, whose book published by Hachette India is set in Delhi NCR, a city, she finds “interesting”.
She is happy with the response she has got from the readers for her rom-com. And she feels rom-com is what her other books would be. “It all actually started when I went for two book readings in 2013. One of them was by a newbie; she had almost 25 people at her reading. The book was an intelligent one so I expected many more to come. Then I went to another male novelist’s reading and there were almost 200-300 women. The idea of the book was fun and I realised that I wanted to write a rom-com, too. I will continue writing in the genre because that’s what I relate to the most,” she says.
