“The wine industry in India has a bright future. Within a decade, it will grow tenfold, including exports,” Sharma said at an Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority of India (APEDA) event.

He added that vineyards are growing and production of wine is increasing.

Currently, India’s wine exports are about Rs 25 crore.

Commerce secretary SR Rao said that the Indian wine industry is presently in a nascent stage but is expected to grow multi-fold.

APEDA chairman Asit Tripathy said that though the world wine market is dominated by French, Italian, Spanish and American wines, Indian wines too are becoming popular in overseas markets and are also beginning to make an appearance at global food shows.

Presently, Indian wines are largely being imported by Malaysia, Japan, UAE, Bhutan, Germany, USA, UK, Sri Lanka, Maldives and New Zealand.
