Debt-hit farmer kills self in Mansa

A 62-year-old farmer, Roop Singh, committed suicide by jumping before a train in Chehlanwala village of Mansa district on Sunday. Already under a debt of Rs 2 lakh, Roop was reportedly depressed after the cotton crop over his 3.5-acre land got damaged as a flood-like situation engulfed some villages of Mansa. He is survived by three daughters.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda) district president Ram Singh Bhaini Bagha reacted, "The state government should provide immediate compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the victim's and clear all his private and government debts. Immediate relief to farmers affected by waterlogging should also be given."
