A public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment of Sumedh Singh Saini as director general of police, Punjab, came up for hearing in the Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday.
The division bench comprising chief justice Ranjan Gogoi and justice Mahesh Grover questioned the locus standi (legal standing or right) of the petitioner, Voices for Freedom (an NGO), in filing such a petition.
The PIL alleges that the Punjab government's decision is illegal as a criminal case is pending against Saini in the special CBI court at New Delhi.
Without issuing a notice, the division bench directed the non-governmental organisation to first clear its stand about the work it had done till now with regard to protection of human rights, as claimed by it, within a week, while adjourning the case to April 17 for the next hearing. The petition was filed through one Simranjit Singh, a resident of SAS Nagar, claiming to be the director of the NGO.
