The much talked-about issue of eve-teasing and safety of girl students and working women has finally reached the Punjab and Haryana high court, which on Friday issued notices of motion to the two states and Chandigarh UT.
The matter came up for hearing before the division bench comprising chief justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and justice Rakesh Kumar Jain on a public interest litigation filed by Zirakpur resident Harinder Pal Singh Ishar, who submitted that in the male-dominated Indian society eve-teasing is a menace that has grown to alarming proportions.
He added that both the states and Chandigarh administration had failed to check discriminatory practices against women, and violence against women continues to rise. As per the UT police's records, more than 150 cases of crime against women have been registered in various police stations of Chandigarh this year, he added.
The petitioner also submitted various suggestions to curb the menace -- stationing of police vehicles near educational institutions during opening and closing hours, girl students be sent out 15 minutes before boys in co-education institution, CCTV cameras be installed at public places.
He further suggested that one police official duly armed with weapons and a communication set be deputed in vehicles carrying working women or girl students, and responsibility of the heads of institutions and district police heads be fixed.
