The sixth edition of the five-day annual Chandigarh Arts and Heritage Festival commenced with the event ‘Interface Dance Festival’ at Tagore Theatre on Wednesday.
Kolkatta-based dance company Sapphire creations and San Franscisco-based dance company Robert Moses performed at the event, but virtually they had no glimpses of Indian cultural heritage.
After the chief guest KK Sharma, IAS, accompanied by senior bureaucrats Anil Sharma, Bhavna Garg, VK Singh, Ajoy Shar ma, Amandeep Kaur, besides Major General PP Singh, the six accomplished dancers from the Sapphire Creations took the centre stage.
Without any story line, they presented an experimental dance composition titled ‘Parivahitam- Perspectives in motion’, which was a judicious mix of experimental and contemporary dance forms, with shades of kathak and chhau martial dance genres. The dancers attempted to delineate a spectrum of human emotions in the journey of a man under the direction of Sudershan Chakrataborty. The composition was as complex as the eloquent mime and dance movements, which at times were beyond the conceptual grasp of the audience. Dibendu Nath, Kaushik Das, Pintoo Das, Parmita Saha, Ankit Dutta Gupta and Reema Halder were the top performers with lilting music exuding from Sanjay Banerjee’s electric Spanish guitar.
The sleek and captivating performance came from the Robert Moses Kin ensemble San Francisco, USA. Three trained dancers, including Norma Hong, Brenden Barthel and Kathrine Disnehop displayed intricate dance patterns with geometric accuracy in the absurd contemporary dance form to perfection. The composition brought alive the emotive feel of human emotions and sentiments of peace, love, disgust, pathos, wonderment and more to win applause.
Earlier, 35 students participated in on-the-spot painting competition held in Government College of Art on the theme “Chandigarh the city of art and heritage”. They created paintings reflecting the soul of Chandigarh. Le Corbusier buildings, drawings and Nek Chand’s creations were the main contents of their paintings. An exhibition of these creations is on at Tagore theatre till September 14. Winners will be awarded with cash prizes. A kathak dance recital will be held at Tagore Theatre, while an on-the-spot poster-making competition will be held at Government College of Arts from 11.00 am onwards.
