With the arrest of three persons on Sunday night, the police claim to have busted a gang of thieves who used to lift vehicles for joyrides, before leaving them abandoned. A total of seven motorcycles were recovered from their possession.
Those arrested are Rohtash, 22 , and Sonu, 21 , of Faidan village, and Rajinder, 19, of Jagatpura in SAS Nagar.
The police said the trio got in touch when they were lodged in Patiala Jail in separate cases where they had planned to strike in the city, and were released only about 15 days back from the jail.
On May 18, Pardeep Kumar, a resident of Faidan village, had reported that on the intervening night of May 17-18 some persons tried to break the lock of his shop in the village. When he raised the alarm they sped away from the spot on their motorcycles. He identified one of the persons as Rohtash and noted down the registration number of his motorcycle.
On Pradeep’s complaint , inspector Kir pal Singh from the Sector 31 police station had laid a naka near Faidan Barrier to check suspected motorcycles. During checking, three motorcyclists were signalled to stop, but they tried to sped, but were detained with help of public.
While the police were trying to nab the motorcyclists, the accused received minor injuries as he fell down. Rohtash was riding the same motorcycle which was mentioned in Pradeep’s complaint. He was accompanied by friends on two other motorcycles. During verification they could not produce the ownership papers and it was found that they had stolen the motorcycles. The youngsters had also made an attempt to break the lock of a shop on May 18.

After using the vehicles for thefts and joyrides, they would abandon them or park them at isolated places. The motorcycles recovered from trio were stolen from Sectors 32, 46 and 52.
The police also recovered more four motorcycles that were stolen from different parts of the city. The police also seized a 32-inch LCD and a bag of clothes from the trio. They had stolen the stuff from a house in Sector 49 on May 18.

CAR WHEELS STOLEN
Wheels of another car were stolen from Sector 37 on Sunday night. The police said miscreants managed to take away wheels of a Verna car, which was parked outside a house in Sector 37. Complainant SD Singh said thieves stole two wheels and left his car standing on bricks.
A team of the crime branch also inspected the spot on Monday. Sources in the police said senior officials have formed a special investigation team (SIT) to check such thefts. A spurt in thefts of wheels has been witnessed in the past fortnight.
On May 17, miscreants had stolen two wheels of a Swift car parked inside the government quarter of a school lecturer in Sector 20.
Thieves were caught on CCTV cameras in past incidents, but still the police failed to nab them.
