HC notice to Punjab govt on Daljit Bittu's bail plea

Taking up a petition filed by Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) chairman Daljit Singh Bittu, seeking bail in a murder case, the Punjab and Haryana high court issued a notice of motion to the Punjab government. Bittu is presently in Nabha jail of Patiala district.

Taking up a petition filed by Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) chairman Daljit Singh Bittu, seeking bail in a murder case, the Punjab and Haryana high court issued a notice of motion to the Punjab government. Bittu is presently in Nabha jail of Patiala district.

The first information report (FIR) in the case was registered on September 29, 2012, for criminal conspiracy under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, at division No 8 police station, Jalandhar.

The petitioner informed the court that since 2009, three FIRs had been registered against the petitioner on source reports/secret information, all alleging that the petitioner was collecting weapons, money and instigating youths to revive terrorism in the state.

The petitioner informed the court that in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections of 2012, the petitioner's party was a strong opponent of the ruling party in Punjab, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and it was most likely to win in the next elections. Due to political vendetta, he had been falsely implicated in the case, he alleged.
