The probability of the common man trying to comprehend the plight of a labourer or evaluating his daily errand for survival is definitely less. One rarely spares time. On the occasion of Labour Day, a photography exhibition at the Punjab Kala Bhawan, highlights rare moments of a labourer’s life which one, otherwise, fails to observe.
An initiative by Punjab Art Council in collaboration with Theatre for Theatre (TFT) Visual Art Academy, the exhibition contains photographs of artists from the city who pursue photography as their passion, but come from different professional backgrounds. These include Harvinder Singh, Sunil Sharma, Daljeet Singh, Lucky Kadiyan, Navjot Singh, Gurjeet Singh, Deepak Arora and Pardeep Saini.
Vikrant Seth, one of the organisers from Theatre for Theatre (TFT), said, “TFT has been in the field of performing arts for over 25 years, but this is the first time that it has taken an initiative to provide a platform to different forms of visual arts. Labour Day is a subjective theme which is generally overlooked. The photographers have tried to capture the diverse hues and textures of labourers’ life through lens.”
Freelance photographer Lucky Kadiyan said, “Labourers form an integral part, however, they are ignored. I have tried to bring forward the simple moments of their life.” Harvinder Singh, who works at the Accountant General, Haryana, said, “It’s all about getting the different colours of their life… their work expressions and other minute details. ”Besides, one can also find different types of labourers including agriculture labourers, urban labourers and roadside labourers or a labourer’s child crèche in the images. While Deepak Arora, a photojournalist, has tried to capture the different shades of labourers during their work from day to night, Daljeet Singh, head constable in Chandigarh Police, showcased the hard work of agrarian labour through his images. With almost 55 pictures on display, one can understand the life of a labourer in the most unsophisticated way. From shadows to black and white effects to colourful images, it showcases the innocence of labourers from different age groups. The areas in the pictures include Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
