IG probing police firing case, SSP tells HC

The Punjab Police have submitted in the high court that the inquiry into an FIR registered at the Gurdaspur police station on March 29 in connection with the police firing in which one youth was killed and another seriously injured had been entrusted to the state inspector general (crime).

Gurdaspur SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar submitted this information before a division bench comprising acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and justice Rakesh Kumar Jain during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation filed by NGO Lawyers for Human Rights International. The petitioner is seeking a CBI inquiry into the FIR.

The SSP told the court that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh had been provided to the family of the deceased, Jaspal Singh, and Rs 2 lakh to the family of the injured, Ranjit Singh, from the chief minister's relief fund.

The petitioner had submitted in the court that after the date of execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana, co-convict in the Beant assassination case, was fixed, Sikh youth in Gurdaspur resorted to an agitation on March 28, during which Shiv Sena members assaulted some of them and took off their turbans. An FIR in this regard was lodged the same day at the city police station.

The case will next come up for hearing on August 3.
