An uncle of the deceased, Ravinder Kumar of New Surajganj area, said that Rahul Sharma was walking outside his house after dinner when he was shot in the head by some unidentified persons without any provocation from behind at Central Avenue in Fremont. Rahul died on the spot. The Fremont police have released a sketch of the suspects.

Rahul, aged about 20, was living with his parents Pran Sharma, mother Davinder Sharma, two sisters Mehak (18) and Deepti (22) and a one-year-old brother in Fremont for the past seven years.

"He was very fond of Punjabi music and always talked of coming to India. Three year back, he was here to celebrate Dussehra and enjoyed a lot with the family members," Ravinder said.

Meanwhile, North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has condemned the murder and demanded a high-level inquiry into it. Association president Satnam Singh Chahal said that racial discrimination towards the Punjabi community exists throughout the USA and people from community were facing racial discrimination and such attacks there every day.
