The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA)'s scheme for the empowerment of and effecting poverty alleviation has yielded encouraging results in Haryana.
Sirsa MP Ashok Tanwar stated this while addressing a district-level workshop of self help groups (SHGs) organised by the forest department here on Thursday.
The JICA is an independent governmental agency that coordinates official development assistance (ODA) for the government of Japan. It is chartered with assisting economic and social growth in developing countries, and the promotion of international cooperation.
"Under the scheme, being implemented by the state forest department, 2,200 SHGs have been formed in 800 villages. More than 25,000 families have been earning their livelihood through the scheme and have become financially strong," Tanwar said.
Each SHG gets financial assistance of up to Rs 2 lakh as loan to facilitate women in setting up their own ventures.
The Sirsa MP said committees had been constituted at the village level in the state for successful execution of various programmes for the welfare of women. He urged women to come forward and avail benefits of various schemes of the state government to enhance their socio-economic status.
Additional principal chief conservator of forests Amarinder Kaur said under the JICA scheme, financial assistance to the tune of Rs 16 crore was given to 2,200 SHGs in the state. "The financial assistance has helped women establish self-employment ventures. They have so far generated income of more than Rs 13 crore," she added.
