At least 15 people fell ill due to gas leakage at Wariyana village on the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road on Wednesday night. Residents suspected that the gas leaked either from the solid waste treatment plant or the two cold storages located in the village.
Around 9 pm, several people started complaining of vomiting, breathlessness and uneasiness. Fifteen to 20 of them were admitted to the civil hospital.
Satvinder Kaur, a resident of the village, said her children, who were playing in the street, started vomiting and collapsed. She said her mother also began to vomit and was rushed to the hospital. As the news of the gas leak spread, hundreds of residents started fleeing the area.
Sub-divisional magistrate-II Isha Kalia reached the village. She said a committee comprising members of the pollution control board would investigate the incident and try to find out the source of the gas leakage.
Talking to Hindustan Times, civil surgeon RL Bassan said a medical team had been deployed in the village, along with ambulance service.
At the time of filing of this report, Bassan said the situation was now under control as the intensity of the gas leakage had weakened. “Still, we are keeping a close watch,” he added.
