The Haryana government on Thursday told the Punjab and Haryana high court that no case had been reported regarding the involvement of cattle pounds in the business of selling cows for slaughtering.
The state has told the HC that 67 cattle pounds were found unregistered and these had been directed to get themselves registered. The district deputy directors of animal husbandry and dairy department of the state had also been directed to ensure that no registered or unregistered cattle pounds indulged in the business of selling cows and other animals for slaughtering purposes. The state has 408 cattle pounds, of which 341 were found registered before March. Now, 37 more have been registered and the registration process of 15 others is in progress.
‘DCs TOLD TO CHECK SELLING OF ANIMALS’
Punjab has told the high court that it would not allow cattle pounds to indulge in selling cows for slaughtering. The government has told the court that deputy commissioners had been directed to take appropriate steps in this regard.
The HC was also informed that of the 310 cattle pounds, 235 were already registered and 75 were supposed to get registered under Punjab Gau Sewa Commission Act, 2014, within three months. The submissions were made before the HC during a petition filed by Kurukshetra girl Renuka Chopra, who alleged that cows from these pounds were being smuggled to slaughterhouses and the Haryana government had not acted on her complaints. Following her submission, the HC sought details on the functioning of cattle pounds in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
