Police on Saturday foiled an attempt by Youth Congress workers led by Indian Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring to throw open the newly constructed Rupnagar bypass and bridge over the Sutlej for traffic.
Youth workers also held a rally near Asron village near here. While addressing the rally, Raja Warring alleged that the SAD-BJP government was wasting taxpayer's money for the promotion of their leaders.
He accused chief minister Parkash Singh Badal of not throwing open the Rupnagar bypass and bridge to the public when it is already completed. "Why the chief minister is waiting for the inauguration ceremony to be done by a VIP when the bridge is already complete. We will not let this happen and the Youth Congress will fight for the rights of the common man," he said.
Warring said the chief minister should demand a special relief package for the farmers of Punjab from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Anandpur Sahib on June 19 as farmers were facing hardships.
Punjab Youth Congress president Vikram Chaudhary and Youth Congress leader Rajwinder Singh Lucky also spoke on the occasion.
Later, Youth Congress workers led by Warring marched towards the bridge. However, a heavy police force deployed there stopped them at the barricades and a minor scuffle took place between the police and Youth Congress workers. The police also rounded up several Youth Congress workers, including Warring, and took them to the Kathgarh police station. They were released in the afternoon.
Punjab Youth Congress president Vikram Chaudhary and Youth Congress leader Rajwinder Singh Lucky also spoke on the occasion.
