With the Lok Sabha elections less than a month away, the Chandigarh Police have tightened its noose over the sale of liquor in illegal manner. In just about a week, the police have registered around 40 cases of illegal sale of liquor under the Excise Act. Till March 6, around 50 cases under the Excise Act have been registered.The police claim to have seized nothing less than 10,000 bottles of liquor, including English and country-made wine and liquor.Sources in the police said during election time, a lot of liquor flows in the colonies. Elaborating, DSP (crime) Jagbir Singh said, "To check the sale of liquor, we are carrying out checks at inter-border barricades. The vehicles are also checked on tip-off and
suspicion. We have seized 10,000 bottles and the drive will continue."
The political parties using liquor as a tool during electioneering is not an unknown practice. It is generally practised in colonies and slums to woo voters.
The DSP added that the areas with maximum seizure of liquor were Manimajra, Industrial Area and Sector-11 police station. “The liquor is smuggled from Chandigarh to different parts of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.” The police sources said legal action would also be taken against contractors found selling liquor in an illegal manner. The liquor shops and wholesale dealers were also under the preview of police.
The sources added that the problem was that the contractors themselves were not transporting liquor, but it was being done by their staff. “It is a bailable offence and the punishment is between six months and three years.” CHANDIGARH: A truck carrying liquor towards Uttar Pradesh was seized on Tuesday. A team of the crime branch headed by sub-inspector Ashok Kumar laid a naka near the Railway Bridge, Industrial Area, where the police party noticed truck coming from the Tribune Chowk side and signalled it to stop. The driver stopped the truck after crossing the naka and managed to escape leaving behind truck, whereas the codriver was apprehended and he disclosed his name as Sonvir Singh Yadav of Firozabad in UP.

Sonvir Singh Yadav could not produce any licence or permit for possessing the liquor. The police have registered a case under the Excise Act. On Saturday, the police seized 100 bottles of liquor from the Industrial Area.
