The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has decided that the contract of 222 linemen employed presently on outsourcing basis shall not be extended beyond September 30 and these vacancies would now be filled through regular recruitment.
A statement in this regard was made by the PSPCL'S counsel before the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday when justice Mahesh Grover was hearing a petition filed by Jagdeep Singh and 14 other unemployed persons.
In pursuance of a public notice issued by the PSPCL, inviting applications for recruitment of 5,000 posts of linemen on contract basis, the petitioners had submitted applications (online) in January 2011.
However, the recruitment was stayed by the high court while hearing a public interest litigation by the Ludhiana Hand Tools Association. Subsequently, the high court on November 9, 2011, permitted the PSPCL to recruit 1,000 linemen.
But the petitioners had informed the court that after the high court's clearance, the PSPCL, instead of going ahead with recruitment on contract basis, had appointed linemen by giving contracts to some outsourcing companies for supplying linemen.
The petitioners had prayed that the PSPCL be restrained from continuing to employ linemen through outsourcing companies and the linemen be appointed on the basis of applications received by the corporation in January 2011.
