RIMH incident: Man injured after being shoved by fellow inmate, says report

On May 13, a 41-year-old man was found with injuries on his private parts by unknown causes.
While some news papers had reported that he was bitten by fellow inmates , an inquiry report prepared by Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, psychiatry department assistant professor Dr Paramleen Kaur ruled it out.

The report also clarified that his wounds were superficial in nature and not life threatening, as reported. “There is no negligence on the part of Regional Institute for Mentally Handicapped staff as both of them were present in the class and could not have avoided the incident as it happened in a second,” the report said.

The incident had occurred in a class at the institute, the report stated. In her statement, Asha, a worker at the institute, who said she witnessed the incident, reported that the victim got up from his chair and walked a few steps, then stopped to let another student pass.

The inquiry also found that the student who pushed the victim does not have any established psychiatric diagnosis and is being treated for hyperactivity and aggression.
