Chief minister Virbhadra Singh said the government was mulling to draw a new law to forbid HPU teachers from participating into politics.

Virbhadra observed teachers' participation in the political activities was vitiating academic environment on the HPU. “We'll shortly get a law to debar the HPU teachers from participating into the political activities, said the CM here on Thursday.

“Like other government employees, the HPU teachers will not be allowed to participate in the political activities,” said Virbhadra, adding in case any teachers want to contest election he would have to quit job first.

Recently, HPU vice-chancellor ADN Vajpayee had proposed to amend the university ordinance to debar teachers from the political activities. The proposed amendment was discussed in details by the university's supreme decision making body, the executive Council. V-C's decision had evoked sharp criticism from the teaching fraternity, which met governor Urmil Singh on Wednesday protesting against the university's decision.

The HPU is already contemplating to ban the elections to Student Central association in the university and Central Student Associations in the college.
