Kavita and her brother Ravi, both residents of Khuda Alisher, were booked on the charges of abetment to suicide. UT police had booked them after Kavita's husband, Sunil, had committed suicide on May 28, 2013, and blamed them for taking the extreme step.

Sunil had committed suicide by hanging. Police had recovered a note from his body in which, he had alleged Kavita of having illicit relations with her boss, thus forcing him to take the extreme step.

The case was registered on the complaint of the deceased's mother Sharda Devi who had alleged that her son was ill-treated by Kavita and her brother. She also alleged that Sunil was working in Dubai but Kavita had forced him to come back.
