Bengaluru is grappling with an intense heatwave as temperatures soared to 32.8°C on February 18, surpassing the previous day’s high of 32.2°C. This marks a significant departure from the city’s usual February climate, with temperatures exceeding the seasonal average by 1.4°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that Bengaluru could witness even hotter days ahead, with summer likely to set in earlier than usual.
February gets hotter for Bengaluru
Bengaluru’s temperatures have risen by 2.7°C over the past year, reflecting a worrying trend of climate change. Historically known for its mild weather, the city is now experiencing unseasonably high temperatures, challenging the long-held perception of its cool climate. Bengaluru’s highest-ever recorded February temperature stands at 35.9°C, observed on February 17, 2005. This year’s soaring temperatures indicate that new records could be set in the coming weeks.

According to IMD, Bengaluru will continue to experience clear skies, with early morning fog or mist. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 34°C and 18°C, respectively. Typically, summer begins in early March, but IMD forecasts an early onset by mid-February this year, raising concerns about prolonged heatwaves.
The rising temperatures are already affecting Bengaluru’s groundwater levels, which are depleting faster than usual. In response, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has imposed restrictions on the use of potable water for non-drinking purposes. Residents found violating these rules will face a fine of ₹5,000. The BWSSB has also urged citizens to conserve water and use it judiciously to prevent shortages in the coming months.
