The Ambala railway division of Northern Railways loaded a wagon of food grains (rice) for a private party from Ambala Cantt goods shed for Pampore in Jammu and Kashmir—a first for this route, officials said on Friday.

The initiative received a positive response from the business community in the Valley, following which a total of seven wagons of organic manure were successfully dispatched from Ambala Cantt goods shed to Anantnag between April and June, and later a wagon of rice belonging to a private party to Anantnag, officials said.

Yashanjeet Singh, senior divisional commercial manager, Ambala division, said, “We are ensuring an uninterrupted supply of food grains to the Jammu and Kashmir region, while also connecting local traders with railway freight services.”

“The railways is continuously striving to transport products from small-scale industries and small traders to the Kashmir valley at lower transportation costs,” he said.

Singh said that the latest dispatch to Pampore on Thursday generated revenue of approximately 64,000 per wagon for Ambala railway division.
