Anti-drug campaign: Ludhiana Police destroy over 300 kg narcotics, 2 lakh intoxicating pills
The Ludhiana police destroyed over 318 kg of narcotics and more than two lakh intoxicants linked to 50 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The Ludhiana police commissionerate on Thursday destroyed over 318 kg of narcotics and more than two lakh intoxicant pills linked to 50 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The disposal exercise was carried out under the Punjab government’s Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign and was supervised by commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma. A high-level drug disposal committee comprising deputy commissioner of police (Investigation) Harpal Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police (Investigation) Amandeep Singh Brar and assistant commissioner of police (Investigation-I) Harshpreet Singh oversaw the destruction process in accordance with the provisions of the NDPS Act.
According to police officials, the contraband destroyed included 2,06,590 intoxicant pills, 11.025 kg of heroin, 212.300 kg of poppy husk, 91.125 kg of ganja, 3.689 kg of charas and 440 intoxicant tablets. The seized substances were linked to 50 different NDPS cases and were legally disposed of to ensure they never re-enter circulation.
Police commissioner Swapan Sharma said the destruction drive reflects the department’s commitment to eliminating the drug menace through strict enforcement and transparent disposal of seized narcotics. He said that while police teams continue to crack down on drug traffickers and peddlers, timely destruction of case property is equally important to maintain public confidence and accountability.
Highlighting the scale of the anti-drug campaign, Sharma said that from January 1 to July 9, 2026, the commissionerate had disposed of contraband linked to 532 NDPS cases. During this period, police destroyed more than 3.5 tonnes of narcotics and psychotropic substances seized during various operations.
